Killorglin Community College honours its students
LONG established as one of the highlights of its school year, Killorglin Community College this week celebrated its students’ many fine achievements, with Conor Roche walking away with the blue riband Student of the Year Prize.
Conor took the prestigious title before a packed audience at the school, and Deputy Principal Donal O’Reilly explained to The Kerryman why the Leaving Cert student was a worthy winner.
“We consult with all our staff in an effort to pick a winner who embodies our four core values: courtesy; loyalty; learning; and responsibility. We also look for a diligent student who participates in curricular and extra-curricular activities, and can boast a strong track record,” Mr O’Reilly said. “All that con- sidered, we weren’t short of contenders, but we felt Conor was a worthy winner.
“The school places great emphasis on these awards as it helps motivate students and allows all achievements to be applauded. Our top achievers in the 2016 Leaving Certificate were also welcomed back to formally acknowledge their success,” Mr O’Reilly added.
“We are very proud of the achievements of all of our students in the various areas. This was a celebration and showcase of what Killorglin Community College is about.
“Furthermore, it was great to welcome our past pupil, Mr. Cormac Foley, of Foley and Associates Solicitors, to share his educational journey and motivation with us on the night as Guest of Honour,” he added.
Amongst dozens of prize-winners on the night were Kieran Galvin for the Senior Cycle Attendance prize; ICT award winner Donal Brennan; Languages award winner Hugh Hurley; AIB Senior Sportsperson of the Year Shane Brooks; Liebherr Senior STEM award winner Michael Burke; Astellas Senior Science and Math winner Eoin Doyle; Fexco Senior Business Prize winner Jesse O’Connell; and Bank of Ireland Senior School Ethos winner Andrea Houlihan.
The night also celebrated the school’s high achievers in initiatives like the Student Enterprise Awards; the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition; SciFest; LCVP; the AIB Bank Challenge; and GAISCE, in which 40 of the school’s students participated this year.
