Successful showcase for debut actors

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

IT was a night of firsts in the Abbey Inn bar in Tralee last Wednesday night as local actors from the ‘Act Up’ drama group took to the stage for their hugely successful debut showcase.

As this was many of the groups first time performing on stage in front of an audience, there were understandably quite a few preshow nerves on the night with a lot of anxious pacing from a few of the actors on the night.

When push came to shove however and the spotlight was well and truly on them, the actors delivered their monologues with aplomb, much to the delight of the group’s teacher, Tralee actor Tim Landers.

“They all did fantastically. It took a lot of bravery for them to get up on stage and I think they were all excellent,” said Tim, speaking after the show on the night.

“We’ve got a wonderful group here and they’ve really put in the work over the last number of months; they’ve worked on their stage craft, vocal warm ups, improvisation, camera techniques, voice projection and much more aswell, I’m very proud of them,” he finished.

For an event titled ‘A Night At The Movies’, it was only fitting that the actors entertained the audience with a series of monologues from some of the most famous films out there including ‘The Poltergeist’, ‘Kill Bill’, ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘The Out Of Towners and ‘The Accused’.

The ‘Act Up’ group is now finished for the summer but will return again in September when there focus will turn to staging their first ever fulllength play.

New members will be welcome to join in September, says Tim, and he hopes they will eventually be able to stage a production in Siamsa Tíre.
