‘Kerry, help us reach our destination’

- By TADHG EVANS

NAGLE Rice Primary School could well be on its way to winning a national title in the next week thanks to the excellent video entry it submitted for the RSA Safe Cross Code Dance Competition. But while this would be a great achievement, teacher Caroline McCarthy isn’t surprised the Milltown school is among the five entries shortlisted for the prize.

“All the pupils and staff are interested in promoting road safety,” she told The Kerryman.

“We moved to our new building about two years ago, we’ve far more students now, and with changes like that, it’s obviously important to promote road safety. That’s something we’ve done very effectively here at Nagle Rice,” she explained.

“A lot of effort went into the video because we wanted to stand out from the crowd. It’s not easy to do that with something like the Safe Cross Code, which has been around for decades, but pupils from classes throughout the school made an excellent effort, whether it involved appearing in the video, or otherwise.

“Carol O’Connor choreographed our dance, and Marie Kennedy and sixth-class pupil Darragh Kennedy edited the video before we submitted it to the RSA. After all that, making it to the final of our category was a great reward,” she commented.

The school can’t win without the public’s support though. The video that draws the highest number of views by June 5 will win, so Caroline wants everyone to log on to YouTube immediately.

“Ourselves and another school have been trading the lead from day one, so we’re in with a great chance,” she said.

“You must watch the video in full for your view to count, but ours is only about a minuteand-a-half long, and it’s well worth watching anyway, so get clicking!”

To watch the video, search for ‘Nagle Rice Primary School, Miltown, Kerry’ on YouTube. Alternatively, log on to Facebook, as both Nagle Rice Parents Association Milltown and The Kerryman have shared the video.
