Mayor’s up for a laugh at shindig

HE is best known for mocking politicians, but one Kerry representative isn’t afraid of being made fun of as he has invited renowned comedian, Oliver Callan, as a special guest to his Mayor’s Charity Shindig.

Cllr Niall Kelleher has revived the tradition of the Mayor’s Ball and renamed it as a charity shindig to celebrate St Patrick’s weekend in Killarney.

The fundraising gala event is set to be a great night of entertainment including a pre-drinks reception, a banquet, live music by The Kelts and funny man Oliver Callan. Cllr Kelleher says that he is delighted to be able to help two local charities with the Mayor’s Shindig which takes place on Sunday, March 18.

The Mayor’s Shindig is being held by Cllr Kelleher as one of the key aims of his term as Mayor of Killarney.

Cllr Kelleher is reviving the tradition of a Mayor’s charity gig as this is in the first in recent years – the last one was organised by Cllr John Joe Culloty.

Cllr Kelleher has chosen two charities to benefit from the evening – Rathmore Social Action Group (SAG) and Buy a Bus campaign by Kerry Parents and Friends.

Cllr Kelleher is from Rathmore, so he chose the Rathmore Social Action Group as one of the beneficiaries as he knows first-hand what they have done for the local community, including the construction of social housing.

Kerry Parents and Friends’ Buy a Bus campaign needs a lot of support as there is no funding available for transport for service users.

“As mayor I wanted to be able to help local charities during my term and this event will be a key event in Killarney on St Patrick’s weekend.”

Tickets are selling well for the big event which takes place at the INEC but some are still available from Cllr Kelleher’s office on 0646694101, Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the two chosen charities or from Killarney Town Hall.
