The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
THE LATE MICHAEL F. BARRETT RIP
KERRY golf lost another of its wellknown names with the passing of Michael F. Barrett on Saturday last.
The Listowel businessman was a past Captain and President of Ballybunion and a past Captain of the Federation of Kerry clubs.
He served for many years on the committee of Ballybunion and during his captaincy oversaw the relocation of the clubhouse and the re-routing of the course in 1971.
Away from the golf course Mick, as he was known, ran a very successful tractor and car sales
business in Listowel and following his retirement in the early 1990’s, he went on to establish Listowel Golf Club on his land overlooking the river Feale.
The wonderfully challenging nine-hole layout was extremely popular with golfers from all over the county for many years before it fell victim (like so many others) to the recession and closed a few years back.
Golf was not Mick’s only sporting passion as he was also extremely interested in greyhounds and horse racing.
He bred and trained a number of very well-known and successful coursing dogs over the years and
only recently attended the national coursing championships in Clonmel, while he always made the annual trip to the Punchestown Horse Racing Festival and never missed a day at the Listowel Races.
A devoted husband and father, Mick also loved to dance and never missed an opportunity to take to the floor with his beloved wife Lily or one of his daughters.
Pre-deceased by his daughter Elizabeth (Liz), he is survived by his wife Lily, sons Michael, John & Albert, daughters Monica, Caroline, Martina & Georgina, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, his extended family and his many friends. Rest in Peace Mick.
