Talented teens are picture of success in Go Kerry awards
TALENTED teenagers from schools all over Kerry had their creative eye recognised this week at the second annual Go Kerry ‘Picture Perfect’ photo competition.
The walls of the Kerry County Library were adorned with countless beautiful images on Tuesday afternoon, each one depicting not just a stunning photo of the Kerry scenery, but also standing as a testament to the creative talents and hard work of Kerry’s youth.
Grace O’Donnell of Go Kerry and Cathaoirleach John Sheahan were on hand on the day to present those students with a certificate and a commendation medal as reward for their efforts.
While a number of students were unable to make it to the award ceremony itself, their teachers were present to accept the awards on their behalf and promised to deliver the awards to the students themselves back at school.
As one of the judges on the day, local professional photographer Domnick Walsh said that it was very difficult to choose an overall winner from the chosen images.
“All I can say is that the work is fantastic,” he said. “I would love to go into an airport and see photos such as these promoting our county and showing what we have in the area.
“It’s great to see so many photos from a young person’s eye as opposed to the eye of a professional photographer.
“Young people take a photo of what they see while us professionals take photos of what people want to see, which is a massive difference,” he continued.
Grace O’Donnell and her hard working team at Go Kerry were the brains behind this year’s competition again and she had nothing but praise for all of this year’s crop of photos.
“It wasn’t easy choosing winners,” she said, speaking at the awards. “As you can all see there are some beautiful pictures here. Everyone should be very proud of what they have accomplished here.”
16-year-old Ben Woodard from Saint Brendan’s College in Killarney was named as the overall winner of the senior section and he said he was “delighted” to receive his framed photo and a medal as a prize.
Ellen Kennedy from St Brigid’s School in Killarney was not present on the day but she was named as the winner of the junior section.
