The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Many memories as teams line out for Dylan Crowley
IT’S almost five years since young Gneeveguilla footballer Dylan Crowley passed away in August, 2013, but a gaelic football tournament continues to do its bit to keep his memory alive.
An event for mixed teams at under-11 level, fitting in with the age at which Dylan passed away, the Dylan Crowley Invitation tournament took place in Gneeveguilla for the fifth time in recent days.
Once again, it attracted the best young footballing talent, boys and girls, from Dylan’s part of Kerry and just over the border in Cork.
This year, 12 teams took part, including 10 from Kerry: Gneeveguilla, Rathmore, Glenflesk, Legion, Scartaglen, Spa, Kenmare, Firies, Currow, and Kilcummin. They were joined by Lyre and Dromtarriffe, to make it something of an inter-county affair.
“It’s just our way of keeping Dylan’s memory alive,” organiser Sean O’Sullivan told The Kerryman after the event. “It’s played in Gneeveguilla, the club Dylan proudly represented up to his death in August 2013 following illness.”
The competition produced winners across three divisions, with Kerry clubs pulling off a clean sweep on this occasion.
In Division One, Spa emerged victorious after defeating Rathmore, with Legion getting the better of Kilcummin to emerge as winners of Division Two.
In Division Three, Cork found themselves in the mix, but Dromtarriffe eventually fell short of champions Currow.
Such events can’t take place without considerable co-operation between various parties, and the Dylan Crowley tournament is no exception to this.
It was a point not lost on Seán, who offered his sincerest thanks to all who helped in the name of keeping much-missed Dylan’s memory alive.
“I would like to thank everyone who helped out on the day and in the lead-up, and everyone who took part,” he said. “Between referees, volunteers, and the whole lot, we were not short of help.”
