A share of the spoils suits visitors St Marys more than their hosts

A BETTER result for the visitors than the hosts as Glenbeigh / Glencar needed a late point from Kieran Courtney to secure a draw after they led at the end of the first period.

The Mid Kerry side led 0-5 to 0-1 early on and even though St Marys reduced the deficit to a point, Bernard Murphy laid off to Daniel Griffin for the home side’s first goal.

Seán Cournane responded with a goal for St Marys, but there would still be a point between the sides at the break as Fergal Griffin 40 metre free somewhat fortuitously went past Michael Daly in the St Marys net for a lead for Glenbeigh / Glencar of 2-5 to 1-7.

The second-half was a cagier affair with all of the first five scores coming from frees with the hosts managing to stay in front. Brian Curran and Cournane looked to have given St Marys the win though with late points until Courtney put over the score that ensured a draw.

Their trip to Strand Road will be daunting, but Glenbeigh / Glencar know this is ‘make-or-break’ for them in their hopes of staying up. St Marys have a bit more breathing room at present on eight points, but they will know that the wrong set of results in the next round could see them dragged right back down into the thick of it again.

Only four points separate the bottom six sides in the table making for a number of interesting permutations as to who the three relegated sides might be once the 11 rounds are completed.
