Classic F C 1 Killorglin 2

KILLOGLIN advanced to the semi final after a good win over Classic FC at Mounthawk Park on Sunday in a good competitive game.

Killorglin started well and were putting Classic under pressure but in the 14th minute probably against the run of play Brendan Sweeney found some space outside the box and delivered a great strike to the back of the net.

Killorglin continued to create good chances but were unable to convert so it was 1-0 at the break. Killorglin boss Gerry Kelliher took out the hair-dryer at half-time and it must have worked because four minutes after the restart they were level.

A great move involving Max Gieb, Ryan Keane and Audie Dunlea set up Lee Carey and he applied a great finish.

Now Killorglin had their tails up and in the 61st minute Gary Flynn gave a great ball up the line for Paul McKenna who found Lee Carey in the box and he managed to jinx round a defender and the Classic keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net.

The Launesiders then brought on Pa Knightly and Ricky Flaherty for Paddy Collins and Gary Flynn as both picked up knocks. Lee Carey had another great chance after this and his headed cross looked like hitting the back of the net but he was denied by a great save by the Classic keeper.

Classic weren’t giving up without a fight and they tried their utmost to secure an equaliser but they could not penetrate a rock solid Killorglin defence.

Dillon O’Sullivan had a chance for Killorglin five minutes from time to put the game to bed when he found some space in the box, he rolled the ball back to Ricky Flaherty but his shot on goals was blocked out by a Classic defender.

It was a good all round performance by the winners on the day with Brendan Breen a tower of strength at the heart of the defence.

They now play Mitchels Avenue in the semi-final at Mounthawk Park next Sunday with an 11 30am kick off.
