Rector of Killarney is new Rotary president
THE Rector of Killarney and Archdeacon of Limerick, the Venerable Simon Lumby, is the new Killarney Rotary Club President, following a ceremony at Gaby’s Restaurant last Wednesday afternoon.
He explained to The Kerryman that this had been arranged some time ago and that he knew roughly six months ago that he would succeed Eduard Schmidt-Zorner.
The Rector of Killarney has been involved with the club for some four years, and his finest hour as a Rotary Club member arrived in the company of District Governor Monica Robertson and Assistant Governor Collette O’Neill.
As President, he hopes to maintain the flame the Rotary has shone at home and abroad, and to raise the profile of the organisation’s work. Some of its main projects at international level have seen the organisation becoming involved in helping eradicate polio worldwide, and engaging in disaster relief.
Closer to grassroots level, it has assisted people such as refugees and those with illnesses, and among its local projects have been involvement in tackling blood-pressure problems, and the Just One Life programme, which aims to educate young drivers on road safety.
“The Rotary is always looking to help people and to find projects to get involved with,” he said.
“In taking on this role, I wish to express my gratitude to Eduard for his work during his term as the Rotary Club President, laying the foundations for myself and for the years ahead of this club.”
