Budding plans in Killarney

- BY KATHLEEN O’SULLIVAN

PLANTING 60,000 flower bulbs might seem like quite the daunting task – but it wouldn’t be described as that by those who have been dedicated to Tidy Towns for the last 60 years, given their well-renowned work ethic.

The Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers have their work cut out for them as they aim to plant armies of snowdrop and bluebell bulbs in time to see them bloom next spring, they told The Kerryman this week.

Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns explained that this extraordinary act is one of commemoration.

“On January 1, this year we decided to celebrate 60 years of Tidy Towns Ireland in a special way,” he said.

“Part of that is our mission to plant 60,000 bulbs.

“The flowers will grow each year and will have a lasting effect,” Johnny added.

Last week, the ‘autumn planter’ volunteers came out in force to help plant the first batch of bulbs on Mission Road.

But that is only part of what will be an arduous task – so the group will have to call upon their significant experience to bring this idea to fruition.

“We are bridging the gap between the town and park, creating a link between the two by planting flowers,” Mr McGuire said.

“When spring comes it will really add to the town’s image each year.

“Tidy Towns is one of the most transformative environmental initiatives in Europe, and it was great to see so many people recognise that and join in that weekend.

“We had people from all walks of life participate. It’s also great to see conversations about the environment becoming mainstream,” Mr McGuire added.

And a good start to anything is half the battle.

The committee and volunteers will be as busy as ever for the next two years as they continue their bulb planting.
