London medic says injured cyclist ‘better than expected’

AN assessment in London has revealed that injured Waterville cyclist Mike Curran is “in better shape” than anticipated after a horror accident between Paris and Reims earlier this month.

A relative of Mr Curran’s, Kieran Clifford, said Mr Curran is in London after sustaining horrific injuries when he collided with a car travelling at speed earlier this month in France.

Mr Curran, who was in the closing stages of a round-the-world cycle with his girlfriend, Sara O’Shea, sustained five brain haemorrhages and a wide range of other injuries in the incident.

These included bleeding in his lungs, two fractured ribs, and a broken nose, cheekbones, and fingers.

He awoke from an induced coma in the days following the accident.

He met a brain trauma specialist in Wellington Hospital this week, and while the report was relatively positive, Mike’s road to recovery is set to be a challenging one.

Kieran Clifford said last week that Mr Curran requires immediate and hugely expensive treatment in the UK, priced at some €10,500 a week.

The family is hugely grateful for the support it has received to date, Kieran said.

“We simply could not have gotten Mike to where he is now were it not for all of you,” Kieran said.
