CALL TO DEVELOP INDOOR VELODROME

Councillor Michael Cahill has called on Kerry County Council to help Killorglin become the National Cycle Centre of Ireland by assisting them with their plans to develop an Indoor Velodrome and Olympic Supercross BMX track.

Councillor Cahill said Killorglin has a great tradition in Cycling, including a former winner of the Ras Tailteann, the great Gene Mangan. The Fianna Fail Councillor said a campaign took place a number of years ago, headed up by the late Paddy O Callaghan to make Killorglin the National Cycle Centre of Ireland. The Rossbeigh Councillor said Killorglin would be an ideal location and such a facility when developed, will attract National and International Teams and Athletes to the Killorglin/ Mid Kerry Region. Reply: Kerry County Council in collaboration with South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd has supported the development of a Socio Economic Plan for Killorglin.

The purpose of this plan is to identify potential projects and developments for the town and there has been widespread community engagement. It is important that the group promoting this project engages with this process. The group need also to engage with the Kerry Recreation and Local Sports Partnership.
