A LITHUANIAN man has been charged with the murder of ‘gentle giant’ Dmitry Hrynkevich from Killarney three years ago.

Mr Hrynkevich – who stood an imposing 7 feet and 6 inches in height – died at University Hospital Kerry on October 2, 2015.

He had been found with serious head injuries in the front garden of a house in the Killeen Woods Estate in Tralee two days earlier.

The deceased – who was due to celebrate his 25th birthday just weeks later – was often described as Kerry’s ‘gentle giant’ and was known all over the county for his remarkable stature.

On Tuesday morning at a property in The Kerries on the outskirts of Tralee, gardaí arrested a Lithuanian national in connection with Mr Hrynkevich’s death.

Arnoldas Ivanauskas, with an address at Parklands, Tralee, was brought before Killarney District Court on Tuesday morning charged with the murder of Mr Hrynkevich at Killeen Woods, Tralee.

Judge David Waters heard that when cautioned and formally charged with the murder of Mr Hrynkevich (pictured right), Mr Ivanauskas made no reply to Gardaí.

Det Sergeant Ernest Henderson said that the State application was for a remand in custody.

The court was told that, as a murder charge is involved, bail in the matter must be dealt with by the High Court. Judge Waters remanded Mr Ivanauskas in custody overnight to appear again before Tralee District Court on Wednesday.

Judge Waters also granted free legal aid to the defendant who is represented by Tralee solicitor Pat Mann.

Mr Mann said his client would apply for bail at the High Court in due course.

Mr Ivanauskas made no comment during the brief hearing.
