St Marys leave it too late to close the gap on Celtics

Limerick Celtics 64 Team Tom McCarthy’s 59

TEAM Tom McCarthy’s St. Mary’s suffered a loss to Limerick Celtics last evening. The Castleisland side led by a point at the end of the first quarter, team captain Lorraine Scanlon netting 11 of the 16 points scored but a poor second period saw them trail by 11 at the interval. Celtics made some steals in that second quarter and despite their best efforts St. Mary’s struggled to score and hit just one basket from play, this came from Roisín Casey. The remaining six points came from the free throw line while as expected Frannie Frazier was largely responsible for the Limerick sides 20 points for the quarter. Team Tom McCarthy’s performed well in the third quarter with Denise Dunlea stepping up to the mark and they had a great closing ten minutes to narrow the gap to five points but time was not on their side.

Coach Liam Culloty acknowledge that his squad did make some mistakes but says that they will take the positives from the game .“We did make some mistakes but we battled well, it was a game we could have won and we did get close in the second half” he added that they are looking forward to next weekend’s home game against Phoenix Rockets “They (Rockets) have probably one of the best imports in the league but we have a very strong cohort of Irish players.”
