Over €1.2m for major Kerry projects
TRALEE AND KILLARNEY SHARE FUNDS FOR REDEVELOPMENT WORKS
ALMOST €1.3 million in funding has been allocated for three major smart travel and street-enhancement projects in Kerry.
A total pot of €1,289,000 has been allocated to Kerry under the Government’s Urban Regeneration and Development fund, which is part of the ‘Ireland 2040’ initiative.
The money will be split between the next phase of the Tralee town centre redevelopment project; smart travel and congestion initiatives and funds to advance the redevelopment of Áras Phádraig in Killarney.
The largest tranche of funding will go towards traffic-management improvements in Killarney and the introduction of a number of smarter travel intiatives in the south Kerry tourist Mecca.
There is also provision in the Killarney funding package to progress the Áras Phadraig Masterplan, though details of the specific amount it will receive have not been revealed
Tralee will receive €289,000, which will be used to extend the town centre refurbishment works which previously saw both The Mall and Denny Street undergo dramatic multi-million euro makeovers.
The new funds will go towards the upgrading of Rock Street, Bridge street and Russell Street.
Mayor of Kerry Norma Foley welcomed news of the funding.
“‘Kerry County Council warmly welcomes this funding which will allow for the progression of a number of key projects including the continuing enhancement of Tralee town centre following the major upgrading of The Mall and Denny Street areas,” she said on Monday.
“There will also be improvements in terms of traffic and transport infrastructure and additional cycling facilities in Killarney and progress on the development of the strategic Áras Phádraig site,” Mayor Foley said .
