Local rugby and rowing clubs pay their respects to stalwart Ciara
THERE is widespread sadness this week at the passing of Ciara Orme from Callinafercy, Milltown. Ciara was a proud supporter of Killorglin Rugby Club and Callinafercy Rowing Club. Her husband John was a coach and ‘minis’ coordinator at Killorglin Rugby Club for many years, while her son Rory is a member of the club’s U14 team. Her daughter Charlotte is a member of Callinafercy Rowing Club.
One of the ironies of sport is that it’s often moments of sadness that serve as a binding force and Killorglin Rugby Club tributes were led by its President, Colm Conway. The club cancelled all its activities last weekend as a mark of respect. The club also formed a guard of honour for Ciara.
“She was a lovely woman and the family was immersed in our club. Ciara was always willing to help out in the club and if there was a blitz she would be there helping to make the food and help in any way she could,” Colm said.
“She was always a very kind hearted woman and very positive towards the community and the club. Any club activities, Ciara was involved and she would give freely of her time. The rugby family always pulls together. We’re a club that believes in this and we’re all deeply saddened by Ciara’s passing,” he added.
Callinafercy Rowing Club posted a warm tribute on the club’s Facebook page.
“Ciara’s infectious smile was one of the most striking things you’d notice when you were in her company and one of her many loved traits. Ciara will always be remembered by all of us who knew her personally.”
