The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Handel’s Messiah for Killarney Friary
A PERFORMANCE of Handel’s Messiah is always a spectacular event and you can expect as much from Killarney Music School’s performance of it in Killarney Franciscan Friary on Sunday, December 16 at 8pm. Solo singers, choirs and orchestra will raise the roof with some of the most sublime music ever written.
Regarded by many as an essential part of Christmas, the Messiah was given its world premiere in Dublin in 1743 and has now made its way to Killarney for a grand performance. Handel didn’t intend Messiah for performance in churches, describing it as an ‘entertainment’.
The Messiah’s universal fame and popularity arose from the dramatic and often exhilarating music of movements such as ‘For unto us a child is born’, ‘I know that my redeemer liveth’, ‘He was despised’, ‘The Trumpet shall sound’ and, of course, the sublime ‘Halleluja Chorus’.
In this performance, soloists Aisling O’ Carroll (Soprano, Tralee), Sarah-Ellen Murphy (Contralto, Limerick), Fearghal Curtis (Tenor, Dublin) and Cormac Lawlor (Bass, Tralee) will be joined by the Kerry Chamber Choir and Kerry Chamber Orchestra directed from the keyboard by Aidan O’ Carroll.
To encourage young people and families to attend, children are free accompanied by an adult.
