Procedures to be put in place to inform players about status

- BY JASON O’CONNOR

A BETTER method of communicating with the Kerry senior footballers in relation to them remaining on or being dropped as panellists will be put in place following criticism of how some players learned that they were not being called up by the new management.

At Monday’s County Committee meeting in Tralee, Kerins O’Rahillys delegate Dan Walsh expressed his club’s dissatisfaction at the way some players from this year’s panel learned that they would not be involved in the new management’s pre-season training plans.

Mr Walsh said it was not right the way certain departures had been reported in the media, adding that there should be a system of communication introduced to inform players whether they will be involved or not going forward.

Mr Walsh stressed that his club was not taking issue with any of the decisions made by management in relation to the panel, only with how such decisions were communicated.

County Chairman Tim Murphy agreed that something had “fallen through the cracks” on the matter and said a procedure would be in place in future to communicate with players on outgoing panels each year as to whether or not they would be involved for a new campaign.

Meanwhile, County Secretary and CCC Chairman Peter Twiss said that a review of Division 5 of the County Senior Football League might be in the offing in the new year depending on entries.

This comes after John Mitchels and Milltown/Castlemaine have applied to enter ‘B’ teams for 2019. With Dr Crokes also announcing their intention at the weekend via social media to enter a third team in the competition – to go with their Division 1 and Division 2 sides – anything up to 18 teams could be involved next year in Division 5 if all the teams who were involved last year apply to enter again.

Meanwhile, the Kerry senior hurlers first game at home will be a novel one as they play All-Ireland champions Limerick in their second game of the Munster Senior Hurling League in Austin Stack Park on Wednesday, January 9. They begin their campaign away to Tipperary the weekend before in the three-team group.
