‘We showed a bit of character’ says delighted Pats boss Costello

-

ST Pats Manager Joe Costello, while having a few reservations about the timing of the championship was overall quite pleased with the performance and the result, given the level of importance which St Pats place on the competition.

“It was a good game, we were delighted with it. We haven’t had a whole pile of preparation in the lead up to it. A lot of guys away with college and what not, but out in Blennerville we take our district championship very seriously.

“We want to impress in it, we want to try and do well every year. The Brendans are making big strides as a board, especially, with the senior team and we would like to get the captaincy back if we can, so, it’s great for the lads and it was a long year.

“I suppose we stopped finished training properly towards the end of July, but the lads have kept themselves in reasonable shape and we needed to be, up against a good, young Churchill team today.

“What we generally found was in the first half, that, we were quite lethargic in our own half, but when we did move the ball quickly we caused them problems. I suppose we had a good chance before that [the goal] after a speculative ball from Kieran Dwyer, but, he goal that we got was a great finish by Paul Mac [McMahon] and again, it was one or two quick passes that got us into space and fair play to Mac a good finish.

“We showed a bit of character, the great thing that I was happy about was that we brought on a lot of young guys, threw them into a tight game. Okay it’s a District Championship, fellows are probably not up to championship pace, but a lot of young fellows stood up well, Patrick Dowling, Fergal O Brien, and, a few more of them, so, it was great.

“I think it is quite bad [the completion date for the competition], because as I said we didn’t go far in the Junior Championship our County League finished, sort of, mid August and we had to wait, whatever, almost three or four months to play two games.

“However, in saying that, being involved with St Pats I can see the fixtures congestion that Divisional Boards suffer, but definitely I would like to see it played a lot earlier in the year if possible.”
