Cup action for St Marys senior and U18 women

TEAM Tom McCarthy’s St. Mary’s National League ladies play their Cup quarter-final this weekend away to Swords Thunder at 5.30pm.

Both sides currently have two wins from six in the league. The Black sisters, Katie and Peggy, will be the ones to look out for this weekend. The girls are daughters of Ken and Joan Black - Joan coaches Swords Thunder and was just named coach of the month, and the girls’ brother Marcus, who plays with Kubs, has just been named player of the month,

Travis Black is currently playing in Italy. Neither team will have an American player this weekend but Swords are determined to show that the League and Cup can be played without guest players and Team Tom McCarthy’s will not be in a position to play new signing Mia Hopkins ias she is Cup tied having played in the preliminary round of the Superleague Cup with Kilkenny.

Castleisland will also be without Denise Dunlea and both Aoife Nolan and Cassandra Buckley who out injured, but all in all this game is there for the taking and St. Mary’s will be looking to book their place in the semi-finals in January.

ST. Mary’s U-18 girls will contest the quarter-final of the U-18 National Cup on Sunday in Castleisland at 2.30pm when they meet WIT Wildcats, who are coached by Cordal man, Tommy O’Mahony.

O’Mahony coached the Ireland U-18 squad to silver in the 2017 European Championships. His side played their preliminary tournament in Ulster while St. Mary’s travelled to Killester earlier this.

Wildcats boast four Irish internationals on their squad while St. Mary’s have one in Siofra O’Shea but St. Mary’s are up for the challenge and if the squad performs like they did throughout the qualifying tournament in Dublin they will be a difficult side to beat.
