- By FERGUS DENNEHY

TWO talented young pupils from two Kerry primary schools are this week celebrating being named as county winners in a national art competition.

Mia Hunt, a second class pupil in Scoil Naomh Eirc in Ardfert was named as the Junior County Winner while sixth class pupil from Aghatubrid N.S in Killarney was named as the Senior County Winner.

The competition, which is entitled ‘Someone Like Me’, is supported by the National Disability Authority. It aims to promote disability awareness and nurture understanding amongst primary school students and to highlight the similarities that exist within people of all abilities.

The two pupils have now been placed in the running for the national title.

Mia’s picture (see left) depicts a friendly scene of two girls playing ball together outdoors under a rainbow. One of the girls is in a wheelchair but this does not impede their friendship, and their similarities are enhanced in the piece.

Fintan’s painting (see above) depicts a scene from a football game where two agile, strong young men are playing. Both characters use crutches, however the artwork demonstrates that this does not impede their ability to exercise and play sport.

Both schools will find out their fate at a ceremony at Dublin City today (Wednesday )

Minister for State Finian McGrath TD will choose the overall winner.
