MINORS: Central Region final: GGC 1-7, John Mitchels 2-7 The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors were defeated in the Central Region Division 2 minor final at the John Mitchels GAA complex in Tralee last Sunday. A very poor start - when playing against a strong breeze and intermittent hail showers - meant they were always playing catchup. They had plenty of chances throughout (including at least four goal chances) but will, especially, rue a series of wides early in the second half when they should have closed the gap. In reality, they should have gone ahead given their monopoly on possession. They trailed by 1-4 to 0-1 after 15 minutes and it looked as if the home side were in for a comfortable afternoon. This poor start was ultimately the winning and, in GGC’s case, the losing of this final. GGC - who were without a host of players due to injuries and work commitments - settled with Cathal Crosby, Liam Smith, Conor Sugrue, and Tommy Quirke raising their game. Darragh McKeefry was also showing well in the forward line and he kicked three first-half points, one a free. Kieran O’Sullivan, who had a mighty second half, also popped over a point in the opening term. GGC were given a great boost with ten minutes remaining in this half when Jason Clifford goaled after an excellent move. This left John Mitchels ahead by 2-6 to 1-4 at the break but GGC had the aid of that strong breeze to look forward to in the second. It proved as difficult to play with as against given GGC’s shooting in the second half. They lacked that extra bit of composure in the forward line as numerous chances were spurned. They got to within three with 15 minutes left (1-6 to 2-6) but could never kick on. Highlighted GGC’s dominance of possession was the fact that the winners only managed one point in the second half. Second half points from a trio of under-16s players - Kieran O’Sullivan, Darragh McKeefry (free), and Darragh Blennerhassett - was GGC’s only reward for all their hard work as John Mitchels held on to win. It was a very tough game to play in as GGC had to call upon a host of under-16s, well done to each and every player for their efforts on Sunday.

Well done to John Mitchels on their win. Scorers: Darragh McKeefry 0-4 (0-2 frees), Jason Clifford 1-0, Kieran O’Sullivan 0-2, Darragh Blennerhassett 0-1. Team (13-a-side): Jack O’Sullivan; Darragh Blennerhassett, Conor Sugrue, Liam Roche, Sean Tadhg Sheahan, Cathal Crosby; Kieran O’Sullivan, Liam Smith; Sean Quirke, Tommy Quirke; Jason Clifford, Darragh McKeefry, Rian O’Donovan.

DR CROKES

EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP - O’DONOGHUE CUP 1ST ROUND Played in Rathmore on Thursday 6th of December

Dr Crokes 4-18 Fossa 0-7

We got off to the perfect start and were on the front foot very early in the first half. Our opponents were competitive but scores came more easily to our lads and we built up an interval lead of 2-10 to 0-4. A few early scores early in the second half ensured that we were going to win the game but Fossa to their credit never gave up. We ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Both sides were short a number of players but our strength in depth was superior and this had a big bearing in the result.

FIRIES

TRANSATLANTIC SPONSORS CONTINUES FOR FIRIES GAA: Firies GAA is delighted to announce that the Firies under 14 and 16 boys have continued their long standing transatlantic relationship with L&M Construction of New York City. Mike Lenihan, a native of Firies, and owner of L&M Construction, has not forgotten his roots and generously supports the young men of Firies GAA, much to the delight of the club and their respective management teams. Mike lined out for Firies at underage level under the careful stewardship of his neighbours; the late Jerry Foley and Tom Shanahan. He was a very committed young player and played the game with great flair and enthusiasm. His underage career culminated with an East Kerry U-16 Championship in 1996. Following his educational path, Mike took up a carpentry apprenticeship, which has served him well. He went on to play senior football with Firies and competed in an O’Donoghue cup semi-final for Firies in 2002. Unfortunately for Firies, Mike moved to New York in 2004 to pursue a career in construction, and not surprisingly and now runs his own successful construction company in New York.

Tim Foley; U16/Minor manager, spoke about the connection between Firies GAA and L&M construction explaining that ‘Mike Lenihans’ resounding commitment to his homestead club and indeed, the parish is very much appreciated and valued throughout our tight-knit GAA community.’

Firies Coiste na nOg Chairman, Tim Clifford also expressed his gratefulness adding that ‘It is much anticipated that both sets of players will endeavour to acknowledge Mikes’ valued contribution with many prosperous days in Pairc Eamonn and beyond.’

KILCUMMIN

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Our Seniors qualified for our first O Donoghue Cup final in ten years by beating Currow on Sunday last on a score line of 1-17 to 0-12. We await the outcome of the other semi-final scheduled to be played next Sunday. While missing a few starters from the Munster Final through injury, the importance of a strong panel was evident as all the replacements played a valuable part in this win. Currow who lined out without influential John Buckley were very competitive and matched us for a large portion of the game but our recent competitive games stood to us and we ran out comfortable winners in the end. Gary O Leary won the "Man of the Match" award for his great display while he was run close by the likes of Matt Keane and Kieran Murphy in particular. Team Brendan Kealy, Philip Casey 0-2, Donal Maher, Daniel Moynihan, James Nagle, Damien O Leary, William Maher, Kieran Murphy, Shane McSweeney, Kevin Gorman, Matt Keane, Gary O Leary, Mikey O Shea, Ian Devane, Kelvin Teahan.
