Men’s Shed up and running in Rathmore
MEN’S Sheds are growing ever more popular as an initiative for men of all ages in all localities across Kerry. The sheds not only provide an essential focal point for interaction, but also a means of developing and sharing various skill sets for the benefit of the community.
Rathmore has always been progressive when it comes to positive community led initiatives, and news that a Men’s Shed is now up and running in the town is further proof of Rathmore’s collective vision.
The new shed is located beside the Teach Iosagáin Centre, thanks to Jeremiah O’Donoghue and his hardworking team, and it currently has around 12 members who meet every Saturday and Wednesday.
The range of activities at a Men’s Shed is also varied. Woodwork machinery is available, which is an ideal facility for creative carpentry and wood working. In time it’s hoped the men will interact and contribute to wider community based projects. Flower boxes are always in huge demand and they would complement no end the work of Rathmore Tidy Towns. Bird, bee and bat boxes are also essential for boosting an area’s ecology. This is another avenue that can be explored by Rathmore Men’s Shed.
“It’s good to have the shed as it’s a place where they can pool their resources, ideas and skills to help make a difference to Rathmore. They will also be interacting with other men’s sheds across the county and it’s a brilliant resource for men of all ages,” said Brian Kelly, Chairman of Rathmore Community Council.
