Maes on top in Youghal cyclocross

RICHARD Maes of Killarney Cycling Club took first place in last Sunday’s cyclocross event in Youghal and his clubmate, Matt Slattery was third. John Crowley also won the over-50 category.

It was the final event before next Sunday’s National Championsh­ip to be held at Fota and Richard’s recent consistent series of wins makes him one of the favourites for the podium.

The Killarney club will also be hoping for a top placing in the team category as they are competing with a very strong squad compromisi­ng of Richard Maes, Matt Slattery, Paidi O’Brien, Mike Lucey and Conor Kissane.

In the over-50 category, John Crowley holds the Munster title and will also be hoping for a podium place.

Mike O’Connor and Colin Leahy will be competing in the over-40 category and in the Youth category the club will be represente­d by Patrick Galvin and Eoghan Crowley.

Killarney Club hosting a registrati­on evening

KILLARNEY Cycling Club will be hosting their annual registrati­on event on Wednesday evening in the Dromhall Hotel between 8pm and 10pm. This is an ideal opportunit­y for anyone interested in getting more involved in cycling during 2019.

The Killarney club is one of the largest in the country and supports cyclists at every level. Newcomer and leisure cyclists are made especially welcome and the club’s regular spins caters for different levels.

The club also has a very strong racing contingent in Senior, Masters and Youth categories.

A lot of emphasis is placed on developing young riders in areas such as mountain biking, road racing and cyclocross.

Members of the club will be available at the event to answer any queries or offer advice to anyone interested.
