Kennelly takes the chair of Listowel MD as part of Fine Gael council pact
CLLR Mike Kennelly has taken over as the new Cathaoirleach of the Listowel Municipal District as part of a pact among Fine Gael councillors.
The Listowel councillor has listed out a number of prorities he is keen to work on in the coming months.
Cllr Kennelly will be seeking re-election in the local elections in May of this year having been selected on the party ticket along with Cllr Aoife Thornton.
He said this week that there are many “challenges to be met”, but added that the entire area has plenty to look forward to too.
He said that the €4.5 Great Southern Trail Greenway to Listowel is the “biggest socio-economic” project ever for the area and a “game changer”, one that he and other councillors must focus on.
He also cited the €1bn Shannon LNG terminal as “critical” for North Kerry. Kerry County Council have commenced road works from Tarbert to the landbank. He said roads in North Kerry would also be a priority in the coming months.

Road on the regional access R556 is high on the list of priorities, and the Dept of Transport have advised that KCCs application is being assessed with, hopefully, construction to start in 2020,” he said.
Cllr Kennelly has also called for Kerry County Council and Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) to resurface the roads following the completion of the €20m gas project extending North Kerry’s grid.
He is also hoping that the Listowel Food Hub will come to fruition in the coming months, as it would create 150 jobs for the region.
“I look forward to working with the people of North Kerry and Kerry County Council in the coming months,” Cllr Kennelly added.
Meanwhile, the Listowel Municipal District has also banned election posters within the speed limit signs of towns and villages in the district ahead of the forthcoming local elections.
The agreement, the first of its kind in Kerry, is a pact between the district’s local councillors, and it hoped others will follow.
