Pavement improvement project starts on N70

-

WORK on a €3.5million Pavement Improvement Project in Killorglin town and between Tinnahally and Stealroe, northeast of the town, began yesterday (January 15) and will take approximately eight months to complete.

Kerry County Council, in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, made the announcement last week that work was set to begin. The project will see Tipperary-based contractors GLAS Civil Engineering carry out the construction works on 1.3 kilometres of the N70 in Killorglin town and a further 1.4 kilometres of the N70 between the townlands of Tinnahally and Stealroe.

The local authority said work is beginning now to take advantage of the lower traffic levels during tourism’s low season.

Among the traffic-management controls in place is a one-way system in Killorglin town, which will see traffic moving on Main Street in the direction of the roundabout leading onto Sunhill Road. One-way traffic will also go from the roundabout and onto Mill Road, in the direction of the Laune river.

Kerry County Council said it is hoped to complete the Killorglin town works as soon as possible before the tourism season picks up. Both the local authority and the contractors also said they will try to minimise delays while the project is ongoing.

Minister Brendan Griffin this week welcomed the commencement of the project.

Also this week, Kerry County Council said that pavement improvement works will take place on the N70 between Templenoe and Kenmare until April 5. The works began on Monday (January 14).
