WE can all get sidetracke­d by Christmas and the temptation to over eat and take it easy (even long after Christmas is over!). It can be hard to shift unwanted pounds when the time comes for getting back to normal. But one way to achieve this is by setting yourself some simple fitness goals. The great thing about fitness is that whether you are a committed fitness fanatic or just a part-time one, the benefits of exercise is the same for each individual.

Getting fit can sometimes feel daunting. Many people may not realise it but the vast majority of gyms these days come with instructor­s who are very understand­ing and committed to helping you achieve your goal. This gives them a great sense of satisfacti­on knowing they can help someone reach the personal milestone of getting fit. The one thing getting fit has in common with all of us - regardless of what level we are at - is a starting point. Everything begins with a decision to start and fitness is no different.

Many people feel a little overwhelme­d at the number of people they see out cycling and running these days; it can leave most people wondering where to start. A simple way to get fit for the novice is to combine brisk walking with light jogging. Next time you are out for a walk, why not increase the tempo by lightly jogging for 2 minutes, then brisk walk for 3 minutes while repeating the sequence. It’s a really great way to build-up endurance and is a method of exercise that you can easily control in an effective way. Before long you’ll discover you are doing more jogging than walking. It’s little simple tasks like this that make all the difference when it comes to staying fit and helping to lift those post-Christmas blues, and, by starting today, you’ll be one step ahead in your fitness plan as springtime nears.
