Come in and discover new worlds at Tech Amergin

-

DESCRIBED by many as ‘the pulse’ of the community, Tech Amergin is a busy centre that is always open to suggestions for new courses, events etc. Where the transatlantic cable once connected Waterville with the world, today the Tech Amergin Community Arts & Education Centre serves as a modern beacon to bring knowledge and culture from the region and around the globe to local people and visitors. Tech Amergin, under the aegis of Kerry ETB, organises a variety of courses for the local community under accredited and non-accredited courses. The centre runs a number of accredited QQI courses in subject areas that include Art, Craft & Design, I.T, Health Care & Childcare, Digital Photography, Languages and more.

Accredited courses range from Level 3 up to level 6. An exciting new course called ‘Understanding Community Development’ at level 5 is scheduled to start in February 2019. Through this course, participants will gain an understanding of the key concepts and features of the community development process and its potential to contribute to social change.

It will run ‘An Introduction to Irish Sign Language’ (ISL) in February. Interest in this course has been overwhelming with a large number already registered in advance. This accredited QQI Level 3 class will run every second Saturday morning. If you are interested please call: 066 9478956.

The centre also offers a range of hobby type courses and community education courses in a wide range of subjects including Pilates, Tax Return for Artists, Fiddling with Fabric, Woodwork For Fun, Art Therapy, Adobe Lightroom and many more. A First Aid Refresher (2-day) course will start at the end of January (with only 2 spaces left, please call if you need to refresh your First Aid Certificate).

The centre also organises a busy Arts & Cultural programme which in January 2019 will kick off with John B. Keane’s The Matchmaker, staring Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy. This show has been sold out since early December. Please keep an eye on their website, Facebook and twitter accounts for details on upcoming events. The popular culture cinema programme will start back on Thursday 28th February with the screening of C’est La Vie at 8pm.

As well as the wide range of educational opportunities at Tech Amergin, the centre is also home to a beautiful community garden and plans are well underway in the establishment of a dedicated bee garden. To find out more about this exciting project give them a call. Tech Amergin is always looking for volunteers to help out in the garden, if this is your thing please let them know.

Registration for all courses will take place on Friday 25th January from 6 – 8pm. The evening will be a great opportunity to come and speak with teaching staff at the centre about a course that you are interested in or they can help guide you towards a course. Music and refreshments will be available.
