‘Night at the dogs’ has a major aim in mind

AN application for a judicial review of plans to build a windfarm in Gneeveguilla has been granted and the case will come to court later this year.

Chair of the Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware Group says, Fred O’Sullivan says that is good new for the local community who are determined the battle the planned development of 12 wind turbines in the area.

“These turbines will be higher than the Spire in Dublin and St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney. Some of these turbines will also be less than 500 metres from the homes of local residents and will have a huge effect on health and well-being, not to mention the environment.”

A huge public meeting was held last year, which kick-started a campaign to fight back against the proposed windfarm.

This led to a fundraising drive for the legal costs of taking a judicial review. It is not yet known what court the judicial review will be heard in – the Commercial Court or the High Court – and this will determine when the case will be heard.

To raise fund for the legal costs Kerry football star Paul Murphy launched the Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware Group ‘Night at the Dogs’, which will take place at The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee on Saturday, February 23.

Champion greyhound ‘Giovan Astral’ and his owner, David Fleming, Gneeveguilla, along with Declan Dowling of Kingdom Greyhound Stadium joined members of the group for the launch.

Tickets, at €10 each, are now available for the event. The Sliabh Luachra Wind Aware Group also announced extra options which include transport to Tralee and a meal option. There will also be music and great spot prizes on the night.

The first stage of the fundraising campaign was to raise €12,000 in the space of 10 days to engage a legal team. A GoFundMe page was set up, and with huge community support, this was achieved within the timeframe.

The remainder of the money now needs to be raised.

Tickets for the event are available from Fred O’Sullivan at 087 679 7474; Shaun O’ Rourke at 087 211 6185; and Fiona Fleming at 087 389 6655.
