CROMANE

MID KERRY LEAGUE: Keel 3-11, Cromane 0-7 This was a rusty performance from our lads in our first game of the year. We started very poorly and trailed by 1-4 to nil before a Sean O’Sullivan free got us on the scoreboard. A fine Mikey Houlihan point five minutes before the break was our only other score in the half as we trailed by 2-7 to 0-2 at half-time. Our performance levels went up a notch in the second half as we managed to add five more points, three Sean O’Sullivan frees and another excellent point from wide on the right courtesy of Mikey Houlihan. It was a much-improved display in the second half for our young team. Well done to Keel and best of luck for the year ahead. Highlights for us included two senior debuts, for Jack O’Sullivan and Dylan Falvey, who both performed admirably. Scorers: Sean O’Sullivan 0-5 frees, Mikey Houlihan 0-2. Team: Paudie McMahon; Jack O’Sullivan, John Michael Foley, Ian Costello; Shane Ahern, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Finbar Casey, Cathal Crosby; Danny O’Shea, Mikey Houlihan, Brice Dourieu; Sean O’Sullivan, Sean Teahan, Cian O’Keeffe. SENIOR: Laune Rangers fell to another defeat in the second game of the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon away at Milltown/Castlemaine. The home side fielded a strong team against a somewhat experimental Rangers side. There was little between the sides in the early minutes, as early points for the hosts by Jerry Hayes and Jamie O’Shea (2, 1 free) were answered by points from Shane McSweeney and Colm O’Shea (free) – McSweeney returning to the Laune Rangers fold following a County Championship winning year in Cavan with Castlerahan. Milltown/Castlemaine then took control of the game, adding points from Jerome Flynn, Gavin Horan & Jamie O’Shea before Horan finished a great run with an excellent goal. With 17 minutes played, Milltown Castlemaine led by 1-6 to 0-2. The home team added another point through Jerome Flynn in the second quarter, but Laune Rangers got back into the game with a goal of their own – Jack O’Connor’s effort at a point coming back off the post with Colm O’Shea alert enough to react and palm it to the net. Daragh O’Connor added a point for Rangers to leave four between the sides at the break. Half Time:- Milltown/Castlemaine 1-7, Laune Rangers 1-3. Colm O’Shea halved the deficit with two frees in the opening minutes of the half, but Milltown responded with points from Donal Dennehy, Pa Wrenn and Jerry Hayes to lead by 1-10 to 1-5 with a quarter to play. Shane McSweeney added another point for Rangers, but Milltown/Castlemaine capitalized on a few defensive mishaps, adding a second goal through young wing back David Leane who tapped in a spilled ball while Jerome Flynn pointed three more times (2 frees) to add gloss to the scoreline. Full Time Score:- Milltown/ Castlemaine 2-13, Laune Rangers 1-6 Milltown/ Castlemaine:- Cormac Leane, Ciarán O’Connor, Tadgh McCarthy, Stephen Roche, David Leane (1-0), Pa Wrenn (0-1), Kieran O’Carroll, David Roche, Donal Dennehy (0-1), Craig Counihan, Gavin Horan (1-1), Killian Kerins, Jerome Flynn (0-5, 4f), Jeremiah Hayes (0-2), Jamie O’Shea (0-3, 1f). MILLTOWN CASTLEMAINE

Mid Kerry Senior Football League, Round 2: Milltown/Castlemaine 2-13 Laune Rangers 1-06 Milltown/Castlemaine played host to Round 2 of the Mid Kerry Senior Football League today against near neighbours & arch rivals Laune Rangers. The home side came into the contest on the back of an opening round ten point win away to Keel last Sunday so spirits were high whilst Laune Rangers were coming off the back of a disappointing opening round heavy defeat to Glenbeigh/Glencar in Cloon which they lost by nineteen points so a response was expected from the visitors. It was the home side who were quickest out of the blocks however and early points from full forward and corner forward Jeremiah Hayes and Jamie O’Shea from a tight angle put us 0-2 to 0-0 ahead inside two minutes. Jamie O’Shea on four minutes from a close in free after he was fouled whilst bearing down on goal pushed the lead out to three points after four minutes. Laune Rangers registered their first score of the contest after six minutes when midfielder Shane McSweeney landed a big score from a long way out after Colm O’Shea laid the ball off to him. A minute later and O’Shea through a 21 yard free converted after Daniel Whittleton had been held back when trying to break free from a tackle to narrow the gap further, Milltown/Castlemaine now leading 0-3 to 0-2. The hosts thereafter hit a purple patch, scoring 1-4 without reply as two frees from Jerome Flynn (One in the 10th minute from 14 yards after Vinny Costello touched the ball on the ground and another in the 23rd minute after a long ball from Pa Wren caused confusion in the Rangers goalmouth leading to a simple free in front of the goals). Sandwiched in between Flynn’s two pointed frees, centre-forward Gavin Horan hit the net for a goal on 14 minutes after Flynn popped the ball off the shoulder to an on-rushing Horan who buried to the corner of the Rangers net to make it three goals in two games for an in-form Horan and also an interesting statistic being that Jerome Flynn has been the man who has played the final pass for every Milltown/Castlemaine goal so far in 2019 highlighting his importance to the team. Jamie O’Shea also pointed just before this Horan goal from play to round off the home sides first half scoring by the 23rd minute leading 1-7 to 0-2 by this stage. Laune Rangers failed to drop their heads and would finish the opening half with a flurry as 1-1 before half-time, the goal coming from a palmed finish to an empty net by Colm O’Shea after a pointed effort from Jack O’Connor came back off the upright to the waiting O’Shea who showed great anticipation to finish to the net. Their young centre-forward Darragh O’Connor slotted over a point on the brink of half time also in the 31st minute to leave four points between the sides at the midway point. HT- Milltown/Castlemaine 1-7 Laune Rangers 1-3 Laune Rangers who undoubtedly had their best spell of this encounter either side of half-time started where they left off before the interval as two early points in the 32nd and 38th minutes respectively, both from the boot of Colm O’Shea, a 21 yard free after David Costello was fouled and another free from 14 yards had only two between the sides at 1-7 to 1-5 and rounded off a spell where the visitors had hit 1-3 without reply to make it game well and truly on. Unfortunately this was to be as good as it got and as close as they would come to turning the match in their favour as they would only notch one more score between the 38th and 60th minutes. They would wait eighteen minutes to register their next point whilst during this spell, Milltown/Castlemaine put four points on the board to widen the gap. Donal Dennehy who led by example in midfield when the going got tough got the home teams scoring underway for the second half on thirty nine minutes from play off his left peg (Milltown/ Castlemaine’s first score since the 23rd minute, the only slight negative from the overall very positive performance). Pa Wren on forty minutes with a peach of a point from play after good build-up play from substitute John Dennehy and Jerome Flynn & Jeremiah Hayes on forty four minutes off his left from play after Wren intercepted a ball in the middle of the park before feeding David Roche who popped the ball to Hayes who was in the better position put us 1-10 to 1-5 ahead with the final quarter to come. Jerome Flynn tagged on a 14 yard free on fifty three minutes to punish a Laune Rangers error when a free-kick they had near their own goal didn’t travel the required distance to push the gap out to six points, 1-11 to 1-5. Shane McSweeney for Laune Rangers ended the aforementioned eighteen minute barren spell for the men from the banks of the River Laune when he pointed on fifty six minutes following good interchange play with corner forward David Costello, this however would be their final score of the day. Milltown/Castlemaine pushed for home in the latter stages of this Mid Kerry League contest as points from Jerome Flynn in the 57th and 64th minutes respectively, one from a free which he won and converted from 14 yards, the other a super point from a tricky angle after the standout performer of the second half Pa Wren played a sublime pass which cut open the Rangers rearguard. Sandwiched in between and right on the hour mark (60th min) it was the turn of the new breed of youngsters to lay down their own marker as two minors in substitute Dylan O’Neil and wingback David Leane combined in only their second senior appearance for Milltown/Castlemaine to rattle the net as O’Neil played a ball across the square which was fumbled by Vinny Costello and buried by Leane. Referee Billy O’Shea called full-time after 65 minutes and Milltown/Castlemaine move to the top of the standings with a second ten point win in the space of seven days. FT- Milltown/Castlemaine 2-13 Laune Rangers 1-06 A hugely positive start to 2019 for the Seniors with two 10 points wins to get the year up and running, for the second week in succession they have scored 13 points (3-13 last week, 2-13 today, 5-26 in total), 5 goals in 2 games and only 3 scores conceded from open play in 65 minutes of Football today providing a welcome confidence boost to the defenders on the team. From an attacking perspective the team scored 2-8 from open play today with 0-5 from frees. Well done to both the players and management. Their next outing is home to Beaufort on Sunday next at 12 noon. Milltown/Castlemaine Team: C Leane, C O’Connor, T McCarthy, S Roche, K O’Carroll, P Wren (0-1), D Leane (1-0), D Dennehy (0-1), D Roche, K Kerins, G Horan (1-1), C Counihan, J O’Shea (0-3, 1 Free), J Flynn (0-5, 4 Frees), J Hayes (0-2) Laune Rangers Scorers: Colm O’Shea (1-3, 3 Frees) Shane McSweeney (0-2) Darragh O’Connor (0-1) Our All Ireland Champions: What a fantastic weekend for our former club man Willie Maher when he steered his club Kilcummin to an Intermediate All Ireland victory.
