The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

HERO IN SPORT

-

I’D look up to Katie Taylor but my hero has always been Mary O’Connor from Cork who was a dual camogie and ladies footballer. She was Development Officer for camogie, and she got Kerry camogie off the ground and running, and without her we would have no camogie in the county.

GREATEST INFLUENCE IN CAREER

PROBABLY my family to be fair. We were very much brought up with the mantra that if you didn’t go training you were letting down the team, and you were never to let down the team. That was instilled in me from when I was young, and I’m delighted now that it is.

OTHER SPORT WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY

IF I was in America I’d love to have given basketball a proper go. I played a lot of it when I was younger and play with Team Kerry Cobras during the winter now, but when you see them in the academies now and stuff, I think I’d have loved to have given it a go.

FIVE-A-SIDE CAMOGIE DREAM TEAM

BREEGE Corkery from Cork is phenomenal, I’d have Patrice (Diggin) in there, Niamh Kilkenny from Galway has to be in there. Ann Dalton from Kilkenny and Gemma O’Connor from Cork. Ann and Gemma would have been my idols and I loved watching their style of play and learning from them.

FIRST SPORTING MEMORY

PUTTING on the helmet for the first time over in Killury National School where Maurice Leahy was coming to do a few drills with us. I reckon that I would have been only four or five. That’s where it all kicked off!

WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE ABOUT CAMOGIE

I would love to get rid of the skort, they are so uncomfortable to play in! I would love if we could just wear shorts. I think it’s a gender thing or something, I don’t know. I’d love a bit more contact in the game as well, maybe that’s coming from playing with boys in the past.

SPONSORSHIP

I’D love to have a major sponsor in camogie like the ladies football have with Lidl. Up to a couple of years ago we were still paying for our buses when going to inter-county matches so it would be nice to have some strong local sponsorship as well.

FAVOURITE TV SHOW

PROBABLY Friends. I’ve watched it about 40 times and will probably watch it 40 more times.
