CAHERSIVEEN FESTIVAL OF MUSIC & THE ARTS GOES VIRTUAL FOR 2020, STREAMING ON FRIDAY

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

THE traditional music festival in Cahersiveen may be cancelled but the local community and the music world is set for a very special treat instead this weekend.

Cahersiveen Festival of Music and the Arts are set to broadcast a concert featuring home-grown tenor Gavan Ring and the internationally renowned RTÉ Con Tempo Quartet to replace this year’s festival.

Like so many festivals up and down the country, the Cahersiveen Festival of Music and the Arts has had to postpone their 2020 festival but were incredibly keen to offer something on a digital platform to both the local people of Cahersiveen and the tens of thousands of followers and loyal supporters around the globe the festival has gained in its illustrious 25 year history.

To this end they came up with a very unique plan featuring home-grown talent Gavin Ring who was thrilled to come on board with his home-town’s plans.

“I am humbled beyond words that Hugh and the team have asked me to do this,” says Gavan who has featured regularly at the festival since he was 16 years old.

“Cahersiveen Festival of Music and the Arts gave me some of the most formative and important early experiences in live-performing.

“The town and the festival have supported me all the way through my career so, especially in the midst of all the upheaval and sorrow over the past few months, I’m just beside myself with happiness that I am coming home to do this and give everyone a lift.”

The concert ‘Just a Song at Twilight’ was recorded live in a very special location - Holy Cross Abbey in Cahersiveen - and will be broadcast live on the Cahersiveen Festival’s Facebook page on at 7.30pm on Friday, July 31.

The programme will include a host of operatic favourites along with some of the most well-loved Irish songs.
