Sadness and shock at the news of Peter’s death
CASTLEISLAND and its neighbouring parishes were cloaked in sadness on Monday morning at the untimely death, in a road traffic accident, on Sunday night in Ballymacelligott, of local businessman Peter Galwey.
Described locally as ‘a pure gentleman’ the late Mr Galwey, a native of Currow, had to bear the tragic loss of his son, Peter (21), in a road traffic accident on the Castleisland-to-Killarney Road on August 13, 2009.
Peter Galwey’s death on Sunday came on the day of his 65th birthday.
He owned and operated the Peter Galwey
Quarry Limited business at Fahadubh to the north of Castleisland.
From there he supplied groundwork filling/ trunking for large and small building projects.
One of his big contracts came with the expansion of the Kerry Airport car parking areas and upgrading of the general facilities there in 2003.
Expressing his shock at the news on Monday morning, Castleisland Races Committee Chairman Cllr Charlie Farrelly said that Peter Galwey was one of the most staunch supporters and backers of the races in the area over the past 15 years.
“He got a great kick out of the fact that we called the race he sponsored The Galwey Plate.
“We are all in shock at the news this morning. Peter was one of the soundest men around and he always stood behind us and did everything he could to help, this is terrible news,” said Cllr Farrelly.
The late Peter Galwey is survived by his wife, Breda; and daughters, Morín, Gretta, Brita and Síle.
Peter’s funeral cortége will depart Fahaduff at 10.15 this Wednesday morning (July 29) and will travel down the Old Limerick Road on route to Castleisland Parish Church. At 12 noon approximately, the Funeral will depart the Church and travel along the Main Street on route to St John’s Cemetery. As we’ve all seen in recent times, this gives people the opportunity to convey their condolences to the grieving families. May God be good to him and to those grieving for him.
