The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
GROUP 4
Glenbeigh / Glecar 1-8 Dromid Pearses 0-8
ADRIAN O’Connor’s goal was the decisive score in this one.
The winners were always in the ascendancy once Jason McKenna kicked them into an early lead with a couple of fine points, and O’Connor’s goal was crucial as he buried the rebound after Caolim Teahan’s speculative effort for a point came back off the crossbar. That enabled Glenbeigh/Glencar to lead by four points at half-time (1-5 to 0-4), despite Gavan O’Grady blazing a penalty over the bar, as the prompting and probing of the elusive Chris Farley in attack for Dromid Pearses kept the South Kerry side in touch. Despite some well-taken pointed frees from Farley and Niall O’Shea in the second half, and a great point from play by Kerry senior Graham O’Sullivan, Dromid Pearses just could not get their noses in front, as Pa Kilkenny defended resolutely at centre-back and Colin McGillicuddy was a storming presence at midfield for John Evans’ charges.
The impressive O’Connor added a third point, while Darran O’Sullivan chipped the Dromid ‘keep- er but his cheeky effort just went over, as Glenbeigh/ Glencar held on.
Milltown / Castlemaine 2-15 Waterville 1-8
WHEN Waterville moved into a comfortable five-point lead (1-4 to 0-2) during the first half of this encounter, they never would have expected that they would eventually end up on the receiving end of a ten-point defeat. But that’s exactly what happened as the current Mid Kerry SFC champions put in a superb second half display which emphasised that they mean business in this intermediate competition of 2020.
Cormac O’Sullivan, Sam Dwyer and Oran Clifford were all on the mark for Waterville, but with half-backs, Gavin McKenna and Pa Wren, in sensational form, the sides were all square at the halftime break (0-8 to 1-5).
Even though Waterville got the first point on the resumption through Fergal Cronin, that was as good as it got for Waterville. A 37th minute goal from the ever-threatening Cathal Moriarty gave Milltown/Castlemaine the initiative and they were never to lose it in the remainder of the match.
With Wren continuing to be a talismanic figure at centre-back, , Milltown/Castlemaine sauntered to victory with Killian Kerins notching the second goal.
