Club Championship: Round 1 of the county junior championship took place between Asdee and Renard yesterday evening on a dry evening in Jack Walsh Park Asdee. The first attack came from Asdee but good defending by Renard made Darragh Keane send the ball just wide of the post. Renard worked together from Pa McGill’s kickout which resulted in Sean Teahan being fouled. Donagh Quinlan pointed the resulting free. Asdee attacked again but good defending by Renard stopped the attack and set up Rob Wharton who went on a great run down the field. Good passing between Rob Wharton and Sean Teahan set up Eoghan McCrohan who slipped the ball into the Asdee net passed Ryan Henry. Darragh Keane narrowed the gap with Asdee’s first point of the game in the 6th minute. Asdee tried to add another point from the kickout but great defending by Brendan Kelly and Brian Sugrue stopped the attack and set up the two O’Learys Conor and Michael who worked together to carry the ball up the field and set up Donagh Quinlan who popped it neatly over the bar. Darren Russell sent the ball wide for Asdee before Conor O’Leary pointed a free in the 12th minute. Conor O’Leary and Rob Wharton sent the ball wide but luckily for Renard Ryan Henry kicked the resulting kickout straight to Ronan Quinlan who popped it nicely over the bar for another point for Renard. This was followed by another point from Rob Wharton who worked well with Jim Sugrue before pointing it in the 18th minute. Renard had three wides during the following four minutes from Jim Sugrue, Sean Teahan and Ian Moriarty. In the 23rd minute Rob made a powerful run down the field before passing the ball into Eoghan McCrohan who calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the Asdee net for his second goal of the half. Michael O’Leary caught the ball from Ryan Henry’s kickout and was fouled when doing so. Jim Sugrue pointed the resulting free perfectly off the ground from halfway out the field. During the last three minutes of the half Paul O’Carroll (0-2, 2 frees) and Eoghan McCrohan exchanged pointes. This ended the first half on a scoreline of Asdee: 0-3 Renard: 2-7.

Renard started the second half with an attack but they overdid it and sent the ball wide. Asdee worked well together to carry the ball up the field and Darren Russell pointed for Asdee in the 36th minute. Jim Sugrue pointed for Renard in the 38th minute after Rob Wharton was fouled on the 45m line. During the next two minutes Donagh Quinlan and Jim Sugrue sent the ball wide, due to a strong sun setting behind the Asdee goal. In the 43rd minute Owen Tydings pointed a free for Asdee with Donagh Quinlan replying a minute later with a point for Renard after good teamwork.

Unfortunately for Asdee Paul O’Carroll sent the ball wide of the post in the 47th minute but Eoin Kennedy made up for this mistake by scoring a lovely point in the 51st minute. This was followed by a wide for Renard from Robert Wharton. Renard worked well as a team to set up Kevin Curran who added a point for Renard in the 55th minute. Asdee replied straight away with a point from Owen Tydings

The game on a scoreline of Asdee: 1-8 Renard: 2-13.
