The Black Shop’s tribute to Weeshie

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

‘A LOVELY gesture for a lovely man’ is how one might describe the erection of a plaque to one of Kerry’s favourite sons, Weeshie Fogarty.

The late Weeshie was idolised in Kerry and far beyond for his friendliness and sporting knowledge.

But Weeshie usually left an indelible mark on everyone he met, so it should come as little surprise that Carmel and Brendan Galvin of the Black Shop - An Siopa Dubh - in Castlecove decided to honour Weeshie with a plaque.

Weeshie’s family joined the Galvins for the unveiling in what was a special occasion. Like so many in Kerry, Brendan and Carmel have special memories of Weeshie ‘s commentary during so many Kerry and county championship games throughout his radio career.

Weeshie’s series of weekly interviews also struck a chord with people, especially for the way in which Weeshie could make his guests feel at ease.

Carmel believes that Weeshie’s kind personality is what endeared him to so many.

“He was a pure people person,” Carmel said.

“Weeshie used to visit Castlecove often and would interview a lot of people here. We became great friends with him over the years. He did so much work and we’re very proud of him,” she added.

Carmel and Brendan came up with the idea a few months ago, and had the plaque made in Valentia.

It carries a simple but hugely significant message that is easily understood by anyone who had the good fortune to hear Weeshie in full flow: In memory of Weeshie: The Voice of the Kingdom’.

Carmel said Weeshie’s contribution to local history and communities means his legacy is assured.

“We used to love listening to him on Radio Kerry.

“He taped the older generation about olden times. Joan, his wife, came down with his family, they are lovely. The plaque is already attracting a lot of interest. We’re honoured to have it here,” Carmel said.
