Tips for getting married during the ‘new norm’!

-

THINGS have changed dramatically in terms of large gatherings, which runs against the grain of what an Irish wedding is all about. But you can still choose to look at the situation from ‘a glass half full’ perspective. It’s your wedding day after all.

The main aspects to consider is the arrival of guests, the drinks reception and the main meal. The wedding venue will already have ensured that the requisite social distancing is in place, but it’s no harm to issue a short brief to guests prior to the big day ( just to put your mind and theirs at ease).

Firstly, on arrival make sure that entrance doors are kept open and that entry and exit doors are clearly marked. The use of hand sanitiser should be encouraged and freely available.

Secondly, the drinks reception is a great ice breaker to start a wedding, therefore it’s an important part of the overall occasion. Try to ensure that a private and spacious room is available (preferably with a separate entry and exit door). Make sure signs are clearly visible. It may be a good idea to place the drinks on offer on separate tables to ensure not everyone is gathered at the same place.

Thirdly, the meal reception is the highlight of the day. You want to abide by social distancing but you also need to keep the occasion convivial and relaxing. Current health and safety laws mean your guest list will be curtailed. Once the proper distancing is laid out at tables, you’re ready to go. Where possible try to keep the same family unit at the same table. Water jugs, salt and pepper shakers, or butter trays should be avoided and sachets used instead. Hotel staff may be designated to carry out these tasks.

Lastly, by now most people are familiar with social distancing. Don’t be afraid to issue subtle reminders throughout the day. But most important of all is to make sure that you enjoy the day.
