Grounds for optimism for increase look to be dashed

Hope was that 200 permitted at matches would rise to 500

HOPES that the number of people allowed to attend outdoor sporting events would be increased to 500 from next week appeared to be dashed yesterday (Tuesday) with indications that the Government weren’t prepared to move the permitted number up from the existing 200.

The total number of people allowed into outdoor sporting events remains at 200 under public health advice due to risks and fears of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Many sporting bodies, and in particular the GAA, were hopeful that the number would be pushed up to 500 - or at least doubled to 400 - which would allow more spectators attend the club championship matches taking place at the moment, and thereby increase gate receipts revenue, which is vital for clubs and county board struggling to generate income.

Several in the GAA had made representations to Government figures in the hope of getting the number increased to 500, which many within the Association, including Kerry GAA chairman Tim Murphy, believe can be safely accommodated at GAA grounds.

This weekend was always going to see just 200 people, which includes players, mentors, officials and spectators, allowed to attend the third round of club championship matches, but from the following Monday the hope was that up to 500 would be allowed gain entry.

All over the county there have been scenes of extra supporters congregating outside pitch perimeters trying to get a vantage point to watch football matches, as the County Board has had to strictly enforce the 200 limit going through the gates.

Meanwhile, another 28 club championship matches go ahead this weekend with several quarter-final places still up for grabs in the Intermediate, Premier Junior and Junior championships.

In the Senior Club Championship Dr Crokes travel to Kenmare for a winner takes all game in Group 1, while in Group 2 any one of Dingle, Austin Stacks and Legion can qualify for the final, but Dingle - who play bottom side Kilcummin - will be regarded as favourites to reach the final.
