€3k raised from table quiz for Killarney students’ handball dream

STUDENTS FROM ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE IN KILLARNEY WILL REPRESENT IRELAND IN THE PARTILLE CUP IN SWEDEN IN JULY IN WHAT WILL BE THE COUNTRY’S FIRST EVER TIME HAVING A TEAM AT THE COMPETITION

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

PARENTS, students and teachers from Killarney St Brendan’s College had their thinking caps on this past Tuesday evening as they took part in a fundraising quiz in the Golden Nugget bar & restaurant in Fossa.

This wasn’t just any old table quiz either, instead it acted as a vital part of a school-wide campaign to help send the school’s U15 boys Olympic Handball team to Sweden this July where they will compete in the prestigious Partille Cup.

For those unfamiliar with the tournament, it is the world’s largest youth Olympic Handball competition, with over 1400 teams from 50 countries taking part; the Killarney team have been chosen to represent Ireland in the competition and they will have the distinct honour of being the first team to ever represent the country on that stage.

Speaking to The Kerryman this week, Coramarie Kelliher, one of the boy’s handball coaches, said that the squad of 18 players are very excited about the opportunity to represent not only their school but their country on the world stage and it will be a once in a life time opportunity for the lads.

“It was a brilliant night. We got a great turnout and there was great supports all round from Killarney and from all the businesses that gave us prizes on the night. I think everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Coramarie.

Some of the top prizes on offer at the quiz on Tuesday night were two signed Kerry jerseys, a three month membership to the Castlerosse, and a €100 voucher for the Bricín as well as a whole host of other great prizes.

One of the Kerry jerseys, Coramarie added, was won by a Moyvane native who Coramarie said is now going to go and get the jersey blessed by a bishop in the hope that it brings the boys in green and gold some All-Ireland luck for the summer ahead.

Finally, Coramarie said that €3,000 was raised from the quiz night alone.

Additionally, the group have set up an online fundraising page too if anyone wishes to contribute.
