Killarney Athletic and Iveragh United must replay final after score draw

Iveragh United 1 Killarney Athletic B 1

THE Tommy Healy Memorial Cup final will go to replay after Iveragh United and Killarney Athletic B played out a 1-1 draw in Mounthawk Park on Friday evening.

The only previous meeting between these sides this season saw the South Kerry side travel to Killarney and leave 5-1 winners but this final was a much tighter affair.

All the action happened within the opening three minutes, with Killarney Athletic taking the lead inside two minutes. After some great hold-up play with his back to goal, Dylan O’Sullivan turned and smashed his shot past goalkeeper David Murphy at the near post.

Iveragh United were behind for no less than 60 seconds though, as from the restart Jack Landers slid the ball to Ben O’Donoghue who slotted into the corner back across the goal front.

The majority of the chances in this tie came from set-pieces, with Killarney floating several free kicks into the Iveragh box but their defence stood strong and dealt with the pressure.

As the clock ticked on, there was a real feeling that neither side wanted to be the one to make the mistake to lose the tie rather than push for a winner.

A replay will be played in the coming weeks.
