Protest at closure of Women’s Centre
The campaign group fighting to Save Tralee Women’s Resource Centre (TWRC) are hoping to meet with the HSE in a bid to take over the running of the centre.
Local TD’s are backing the campaign and it is hoped that they will be able to organise a meeting the HSE as soon possible. They have also called on local TD’s to try and ensure that the centre remains open until a solution is found.
The centre is due to close Today (Thursday December 6).
On Saturday up to 100 people took to the streets of Tralee to protest against the planned closure of the centre.
The group marched from Aras an Phobail, where the centre is located, to the town square. The campaign group, Save Our Women’s Resource Centre (SOWRC) set up to save the centre have also collected 2,000 signature.
“The protest on Saturday was amazing and a number of TD’s have also now gotten involved in our campaign,” said spokesperson, Shahidah Janjua.
She said they are confident that representatives from the campaign group can run the centre and an interim board is in place to do so.
“We have the skills among us to do so. The funding is there so there is no reason why we can’ t continue to run it,” she added.
TWRC said have stated that they decided to close because the centre is no longer revelant and is now competeing with other services. Governance complexicities were also cited for it’s closure.
