Reeks District takes its place among the nations of the earth

TRAVEL website ‘Rough Guides’ has recommended Kerry’s Reeks District as a potential destination to its readers for 2019.

Contributors Jenny Cahill-Jones, Kieran Meeke, and Kirsten Powley named 19 destinations they were excited to explore for 2019, including ‘six regions on our radar’, of which the Reeks District was one.

The Kerry region is in gilded international company in the form of locations such as Yunnan in China, the Iberá Wetlands in Argentina, Yukon in Canada, Wadi Rum in Jordan, and Alabama in the United States.

In extoling the virtues of the Reeks District, the travel guide cited a number of assets such as the location’s rugged landscape, ample opportunities in terms of outdoor activities, high-quality accommodation, and festive attractions such as Puck Fair, Glenbeigh Races, and Biddy’s Day.

The district covers a wide area, stretching around Castlemaine Harbour to other beauty spots such as Rossbeigh Strand, Inch Beach, Caragh Lake, and MacGillycuddy’s Reeks.

Following its recent rebranding to place more attention on its potential as an outdoor and adventure destination, the region has attracted significant interest from tourists and journalists alike, and this recognition is a welcome development in its successful rebranding.

“We are both astounded and delighted to have been selected as one of Rough Guides’ Best Places to Visit for 2019,” said Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster Chairperson Jens Bachem.

“We always thought the Reeks District had much more to offer visitors and we are proud to be reaping the first rewards of our re-branding of this magnificent region,”Jens told The Kerryman.
