Cancer survivors on song
CANCER survivors in Sligo will soon have something to sing about... literally.
The global choral project made up entirely of cancer survivors and aptly named ‘Something to Sing About’ (STSA) is about to be launched in the Sligo region.
All cancer survivors who like to sing are being encouraged to flex those vocal chords.
The unique project is the brainchild of Dr. Paul Donnellan, a consultant medical oncologist formerly based at Sligo General Hospital, where he established the innovative fund-raising organisation, SHOUT, which has raised thousands of euro for oncology services.
He's enlisted the help of local oncology nurses, Berna Kavanagh and Bernie O'Donnell, both experienced singers in their own right, to get the Sligo choir into full voice.
Already, Dr. Maria Campell, herself a cancer survivor, has been enlisted as Musical Director.
A native of Co. Mayo, Maria has extensive experience of working with adult and childrens choirs and also composes and arranges pieces for performance.
She says: “This is a great way of bringing cancer survivors together in a fun environment.
“I'm really looking forward to our weekly get togethers whrere people will have the chance to sing together and reap the benefits which singing has to offer.”
