Pulling together for future of Waterpoint

- HARRY KEANEY

THERE HAVE been many casualties from the ongoing recession.

But the community in Enniscrone is determined that Waterpoint will not be one of them.

Just before Easter this year, word seeped out that Waterpoint was experiencing financial difficulties.

Many were shocked, and some had issues with how the facility had been run in recent times.

But the overwhelming response has been people offering their assistance to ensure the long term viability of this community facility.

Dermot O’Regan was recently appointed chairman of Waterpoint.

He said: “My initial reaction was to call on the community for their support.

“And I’m delighted to say that they have not been found lacking.

“Teams of volunteers have been working hard; cleaning, weeding and tidying.

“Local tradesmen have also got involved power washing, painting, repairing and upgrading facilities.

“Local businesses have also contributed either financially or by making donations of practical items”

O’Regan has also set up a task force to concentrate on marketing the facility going forward.

Keith O’Dowd, a member of this task force, has been instrumental in rallying volunteers to transform the free playground at Waterpoint in time for the busy summer season.

O’Dowd has issued an invitation to families from far and near to come to a free Family Picnic on Saturday the 28th of June between 2 and 4pm.

A 50 foot bouncy castle with built in obstacle course promises to be a hit with the bigger children, while there will be a smaller bouncy castle for smaller children.

O’Dowd went on to point out that the astro- turf pitches will also be open for all to enjoy.
