MANY STREETS WILL BE SHUT

- EMMA GALLAGHER

ONE OF the areas that much planning requires ahead of the August Fleadh is traffic management.

Many of the city’s streets will be shut during the festival, particularly the likes of O’Connell Street, Wine Street and Teeling Street.

Brian Flynn of Sligo County Council explained what lies ahead.

He said: “The message that we are giving out is for people living close- by to leave their cars at home. “Avail of shuttle buses or walk. “Traffic congestion will be inevitable,” he added.

From Friday, August 8th until Tuesday, August 19th, O’ Connell Street will be fully closed.

Quay Street, from its junction with Wine Street to Lower Quay Street will be shut from Wednesday, August 13th until Monday, August 18th.

The same dates apply for The Mall and JFK Parade.

The Northbound lane of Teeling Street from its junction with Chapel Street to Castle Street will be closed from 7pm on August 13th until the 8am on the 18th.

This is the same for Castle Street, Grattan Street, Market Street, Harmony Hill, John Street and Stephen Street.

Parts of Wine Street, Lower Know Street, Hyde Bridge, Lake Isle Road, Bridge Street, Thomas Street, Teeling Street, Abbey Street and Fish Quay will be closed from 6pm from August 1418th.

Meanwhile, the Stephen Street carpark will be reserved for the Fleadh gig rig, closing from August 7th until the 18th.

The same dates apply to the Mall carpark, which will accommodate casual trading and the Fleadh fun fair.

Quay Street car- park will be reserved for disabled parking, closing from August 13th until the 18th.

Abbey Street car- park will also facilitate disabled car parking, shutting from August 14th until the 18th.

Delivery access will be strictly limited between 7am and 10am.

Brian added: “All traffic will mostly be using the Adelaide Street or Inner Relief Road.

“Three temporary taxi ranks will be located at Holborn Street, Pearse Road and High Street.

“There are plenty of park and ride areas such as the Carraroe Retail Park, the field across from there will accommodate 800 spaces.

“The social welfare offices at Summerhill will have in the region of 1200 spaces.

“While on the Northside, there will be three park and ride locations, including two along the Clarion Road and Mount Shannon.”

It is hoped to have more than 700 spaces at these areas.
