Coleman can do well according to Ronnie Whelan
NEW SLIGO Rovers manager John Coleman can do well at the Showgrounds.
That’s the view of former Liverpool legend, Ronnie Whelan.
Whelan took part in the biggest ever Rovers Golf Classic at County Sligo Golf Club.
A record 104 teams entered, representing over 400 golfers on Thursday and Friday.
And, Rovers are set to benefit by € 20,000 as a result.
That is according to organisers Vincent Nally and Glen Gilmartin.
Speaking exclusively to The Sligo Champion - one of the main sponsors of the event - Whelan said: “I know John from Liverpool FC TV. “He will certainly get people playing. “He has his own style and plays very much on the front foot.”
The former Republic of Ireland international says he was delighted to take part in the Golf Classic. He said: “Vincent Nally asked me and I was happy to come and play.
“I’ve never been on the golf course before, but it is very good.
“Events like this are important for clubs like Sligo Rovers, because the money just isn’t in the game in Ireland now. “These fundraisers are vital.” Vincent Nally thanked all those who took part and all those who donated prizes and helped in the organisation.
County Sligo Golf Club Captain, Anton Murphy said the fact that over 400 golfers took part showed the wonderful support for Sligo Rovers.
Jim Ricard, Jim Bowe, Jay Rush and Francie McGranaghan ( 91 points) were winners on day one, with Kevin McCarthy, Niall Walsh, J Connolly and M Flynn winners on day two with 95 points.
