Flying the green flag in Curry

-

THEY’RE flying their Green Flag at Scoil Mhuire gan Smal in Curry.

That’s after local soccer hero Raffaele Cretaro helped them raise it.

Raff visited the school on the first day of the World Cup to raise the school’s Green Flag for Sustainable and Active Travel.

The school have been working on the Green- Schools Travel theme with An Tasice Education Officer Imelda Ryan- Jones since September 2012.

The community came together on Thursday 12th June to celebrate all their efforts.

These included promoting more walking and cycling, as well as travelling by bus to school

Imelda said: “In the six years I have been working on the GreenSchools Travel theme, in many counties, I have to say that the pupils from Curry deserve their own winning trophy for being the most creative composers of Travel songs.

“The children really impressed the audience with their fabulous performances.”

Raffaele informed the children that he had recently purchased a new bike so that he can cycle from Tubbercurry to Sligo Town for his training sessions.

Imelda took the opportunity to remind everyone about the benefits of walking and cycling more often, especially for health and wellbeing.

She also congratulated Ms Niamh Leonard, the teacher who leads the Green- Schools programme at Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, and all the families and staff for working so hard on promoting active travel to the school families and wider community.

The staff and Parents Association put on a lovely spread of food for everyone in attendance to enjoy, which included lots of fancy buns each with their own Green Flag.

The icing on the cake for the children was getting their photo taken with Raffaele as well as receiving free tickets to a Sligo Rovers match.
