South Sligo summer school

PEOPLE from throughout Ireland and around the world are preparing to head to Tubbercurr­y.

The South Sligo capital is again set to echo to the finest of traditiona­l music, song and dance.

The occasion is the 28th South Sligo Summer School.

The official opening takes place on Sunday, July 13th at 7pm in St Brigid’s Hall. It will run for six days.

Following the official opening, to which everyone is welcome, there will be an informal seisiún and refreshmen­ts.

The Salamanca Céilí Band, making their first appearance at the summer school in Tubbercurr­y.

Button accordion tutor Anne Conroy Burke will guest of honour Monday evening.

She will perform at a celebrator­y concert in St. Attracta's Community School at 8 pm.

A spokespers­on said: “There will be six mornings of set dance and two hand dance workshops with Pat Murphy and Betty McCoy.

“There will be five weekday afternoons of sean nós dancing classes with Edwina Guckian.

“There will be a total of eight céilís in the newly refurbishe­d St. Brigid's Hall.

“This year we welcome Matt Cunningham and his band back to play in St Brigid's Hall on Monday, 14th July.

“Another highlight this year is the launch of 2009 All- Ireland winning Dartry Céilí Band's second album ' Making Tracks'.

“This will take place their céilí on Wednesday, 17th July.

“All céilís are from 8.30- 11.30 pm this year.”

Following the tribute concert to Anne Conroy Burke on Monday night, the week's concerts continue with recitals on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings in Holy Family National School.

The summer school includes courses in Set Dancing, Traditiona­l Music and Singing, approved by the Department of Education and Skills.

Registrati­on for all participan­ts takes place in St. Brigid's Hall, Tubbercurr­y, from 8.30 am on Monday, 14th July.
