COUNTY SLIGO

THE COUNTY Sligo Senior Cup team bounced back quickly from the disappointment of an early knock out in the Barton Shield last week to win the provincial Senior Cup title in Connemara in style and have their sights firmly set on the double by retaining their All- Ireland title in the blue ribband event of team golf.

In a fiendishly difficult wind and on a links that was running hard and fast, they led the Saturday qualifier by 13 shots - setting the tone for the weekend. Declan Reidy with a one over 73 had the tournament's best score by two followed by Sean Flanagan who birdied his last three holes for a 75. Mark Morrissey, Steffan O'Hara and David Brady all chipped in with solid 76’ s.

The semi- final against Athlone was won in equally emphatic style on a 4- 1 score line. Performance of the morning went to debutant Ruarai O'Connor who with five birdies won 5& 4.

So to the final and old foes Galway Golf Club. While Co. Sligo may have been considered slight favourites, it was always going to be a tough battle. Sean Flanagan at number one got ahead early and never let go closing out with a birdie three on 16 to beat good friend and fellow international Ronan Mullarney. David Brady had a tough day at the office as he faced seasoned campaigner and Irish International Joe Lyons who was under par winning 5& 4. Match 1- 1.

Young Ruarai was next and after getting ahead early was being hauled back by a tenacious Michael Hennelly . Nerveless putts of 25 feet on 12 and 30 feet on 16 proved crucial as he went 2 for 2 on the day winning on the17th. Match now 2- 1. Mark Morrissey was playing at number five and while he was two up playing 13 attention now turned to local hero from last year's All- Ireland, Steffan O Hara. Two up early playing Damian McDonagh, the match then ebbed and flowed as blows were traded. Still two up playing 17, Damian made a fantastic birdie four to ask the question and once again Steffan answered holing a lightening fast downhiller from 18 feet to secure an unassailable 31 lead. High fives all round as the boys sent smoke signals to let Mark know he could stroll in from the 15th now that victory was secure. Team captain Mark Rooney accepted the pennant on behalf of the squad, thanked his team for all their hard work and the Galway team for the sporting manner of the match - acknowledging that victory was just a stepping stone to defending the title to be played in Carton House in September.

Super Coach Keith O Neill also got an honourable mention for his preparation work with the team in the run- up to the event. Mark then presented the pennant to a beaming club captain Anton Murphy who completed the formalities.

Another beaming captain at the weekend was Niall Stafford who guided his Cecil Ewing team to victory over Ballaghaderreen.

Blistering sunshine was reflected in blistering performances on Sunday as golfers singed the course with their scores. Hottest of the hot was James Barnicle who finished 8up versus par to win the Centenary Cup, sponsored by Coburns. John Nugent and Seamus O'Hara were just a few degrees cooler in returning red hot scores of 6up, John shading the back nine. John Sheehy and Gary Byrne battled it out for fourth with John winning the “heat” with a better back nine. Both were 3up. 92 people played with a CSS of 71.

Best of luck to our Captain, Anton Murphy, for his Captain's Day next Saturday. Everyone in the club wishes him the very best and hopes it will be both immensely enjoyable and memorable for Anton. The timesheet draw is now on the website.

STRANDHILL

CAPTAIN’S DAY ( Jim Branley) on Sunday . The weather was good and the teamsheet full of hopeful golfers for Captain Jim Branley’s prize. The course was in top condition and all acknowledged the efforts of the course staff . Keeping the ball in play and avoiding the rough was the way to score . Getting into the final 21 was the plan for all but not easy to complete without a few problems along the way. The lovely weather with a slight breeze made for some excellent scoring. A few hard luck stories also as the rough and bunkers played their part. Best early scores came from Gerry Kilbride with a 63 with Diarmuid Finan Seamus Howley and John Verdon one shot back. Larry Culkin, Liam Kavanagh, John Howley and Larry Culkin were also in there with 65s. Frank Hannon, Robbie Henneberry, Randall Cross, Tristan Probst and Jackie Coyle were all in with a big chance as the final 9 holes approached.

The final 9 holes saw a wonderful performance from John Howley completing the 9 holes in a net 30 to give a final tally of 95. Tristan Probst played great golf to claim 2nd from Gerry Kilbride in 3rd.

Club President Brian Harte was in great form in the clubhouse with the Captain his family and everyone enjoying the great food provided by Derek Tommy and the staff. John Howley was in top form with his acceptance speech and a popular winner of 2014 Captain’s prize.

Our Jimmy Bruen team played Enniscrone in a the zone final match on Monday last . Dessie Timbs had changed the team astutely and the response was a great 4- 1 win against a very strong Enniscrone team. The performance of Jim Branley/ John Howley and Ciaran Fox/ Ray Foley to win both matches in Ennisrone was some achievement. This was matched by excellent play from the lads at home . This victory ensures a place in the Connacht Finals at Strandhill in early August. This will be a great occasion for the club to have a team competing at home for the All Ireland. We ask all members to try and keep those dates free and give well deserved support to Dessie and our team . Team was Robbie Henneberry / Ronnie Conlon , Brian Henry/ Noel Tivnan , David Lindsay/ Tristan Probst Jim Branley/ John Howley Ciaran Fox / Ray Foley . Well done to all involved in a great day for the club.
